Admitting to yourself that you still harbor some resentment toward your ex or the opposite sex in general is the first step in overcoming it. You’ll also want to work on your self-esteem and self-worth and learn to turn inward only for approval and recognition. Tap into your support network, too. They’ll help you see when you slip into your resentful attitudes. By freeing yourself of resentment, you’ll be more open to dating and the possibility of building a healthy new relationship.

Are you active and engaged?

Your level of physical activity and engagement in the world that surrounds you is a telltale sign of dating readiness. Why? Because it means that you’re present in today and not held back by the past.

Aside from the fact that physical activity elevates endorphin levels that increase the feeling of happiness, the pursuit of interests and recreational activities prepares you for connecting with other people, particularly future mates. Imagine going on a date with someone who can’t articulate one thing that interests them. How could you possibly engage in a conversation with such an individual?

Flowers and bouquets of flowers have a meaning of their own. Most of us know that a dozen red roses means, “Be mine.” But did you know, for example, that a primrose means, “I can’t live without you,” or that a purple hyacinth means, “Please forgive me,” or that a pink carnation means, “I’ll never forget you,” or that a gladiolus means, “Give me a break?”

Flower meanings have been used to convey ideas, feelings and messages for centuries. The word, floriography, has been coined for the assignment of meaning to flowers. There is a meaning to colors of flowers, to numbers of flowers, and to groups of flowers. It is a silent language that has been largely lost to us through lack of use.

In addition to the obvious choices of color and variety, the language of flowers also includes the way flowers are worn or presented. Presenting flowers upright conveys a positive meaning, but if they are presented upside down the meaning is the opposite. If a ribbon is included with the flowers and is tied to the left then the meaning of the flowers refers to the giver, but if the ribbon is tied to the right then the meaning refers to the recipient. Also, flowers can be used to answer questions. When they are presented with the right hand the answer is “yes,” but when presented with the left hand the answer is “no.”

History

The Turks in the 17th century seemed to develop flower meanings. In 1718 the wife of the British ambassador to Constantinople, Lady Mary Wortley, wrote a letter expounding on the “Secret Language of Flowers” that she had discovered during her visits to Turkey. Europe quickly picked up on the concept.

In 1819 Louise Cortambert, under the pen name, Madame Charlotte de la Tour, wrote and published what seems to have been the first dictionary of the flower language entitled, Le Language des Fleurs. It was a small book, but it became a popular reference on the subject.

During the Victorian era, the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, the meaning and language of flowers became increasingly popular. Victorian women especially picked up the silent language that allowed them to communicate feelings and meanings that the strict propriety of the times would not allow. Tussie-mussies, a bouquet of flowers wrapped with a lace doily and tied with a satin ribbon became a popular and valued gift of the times.

In 1884 a whole book on the subject and entitled, The Language of Flowers, by Jean Marsh and illustrated by Kate Greenaway, was published in London. It became popular and respected and has been the standard source for Victorian flower meaning ever since.

What to Do

With the lists above you should be able to assemble a meaningful gift of flowers or a bouquet that conveys a complex thought. Wrap the flowers appropriately and present them in a significant manner. Then, just to be certain that your efforts are not misinterpreted, include a card that fully explains the meaning of your flowers.

After a few flower presentations you should be able to drop the explanatory notes and begin enjoying and sharing the silent language of flowers.

The most important thing is eye contact when flirting. This is really the one single golden rule of flirting! Sounds easy, but can initially be difficult to establish for longer than a second or two. So when you next go out, find a guinea pig to practice on! Once you have decided on your target, look directly at him/her, then look away and always accompany this look with a smile. If they seem not to have noticed you, look again and this time smile directly at him/her. At first this really will be hard but once you get a reaction you will find your confidence will increase.

Once they have noticed you it is worthwhile having a few lines prepared for when they come over. However, if this does not happen, despite what you thought was a good reaction to your earlier eye contact, why don’t you try approaching them? It could be that they are feeling just as unsure as you, so it’s better to try rather than wonder what might have been.

When you do get to talk, always remember to be pleasant and smile while flirting — this will help put the other person at ease and also gives the impression that you are relaxed, even if inwardly you are shaking from nerves!

Another piece of advice is to use the target’s name often in conversation with him or her… people love to hear their own names. You’ll be surprised how their attention is amplified by this simple act.

Other tricks to let someone know you’re interested: touch the person a lot while you’re talking to him or her (placing a hand on his or her arm for a moment to emphasize a point, that sort of thing).

A lot of people feel like they need to be talking all the time in order to keep the conversation going. It’s always, always better to get the other person talking instead. Ask the person questions about him/herself and (here’s the important part) pay attention to the answers. Being listened to is sexy; give your crush your full attention and you’ll be remembered for it.

“I’d like to find a partner who dances. Do you?” my profile on Match.com asked. My now-husband Drew emailed that he was willing to take lessons, and that was enough for me. Non-dancer Drew’s courage to put himself out on the dance floor and to show in lesson after lesson his amateur status was truly impressive. We took private dance instruction for a year before our wedding, and as a result, got around the dance floor quite gracefully at our reception.

Women are dying to dance. Any man who can ask a woman to dance, then take charge of what happens on the floor and move relatively smoothly to music, has enormous appeal. Fat or skinny, short, tall, or not even close to attractive, even old, old, old, a man who is comfortable on the dance floor has his pick of the ladies.

For whatever the reason, dancing intoxicates. Especially women.

Few men can really dance, and those guys are on the floor constantly. Some men think they can dance and do get up, ask the ladies, and have fun. But at least half the men sit or stand uncomfortably on the sidelines with all the women who wish to be on the dance floor.

We women don’t get to dance nearly as much as we’d like to, even the ladies who are good dancers. There aren’t enough dancing men to go around. You can almost feel the yearning, the sadness, and the disappointment in those women and between those non-dancing couples. And the non-dancing guys? Pathetic.

I personally know three women close to my age who met their now-spouses on the dance floor, and those ladies were great catches! Gentlemen and ladies, there’s a message here.

Guys:

1. Take lessons and learn how to dance. Leading well takes skill, but if Drew could learn how, so can you.
2. Go to dances.
3. Ask women to dance. Lots of women. They’ll love it. Even if you aren’t so good, they’ll appreciate your efforts.

Dance lessons themselves are good places to meet women, and most dance studios have regular parties for their students to practice what they have learned.

Ladies:

1. Take dancing lessons yourself and learn how to follow. Here I was, 50 years old, thinking I loved to dance, and I had no idea how to do the woman’s part! Following takes skill! You have to figure out what your partner has in mind for you to do in a split second, and then actually do it, all while dancing backwards.
2. Buy yourself some real ballroom dancing shoes, maybe with high heels. Believe it or not, those shoes are comfortable. They have to be. Not only do they look very sexy, they stay on your feet!
3. Hang out at dances, too, if you like to dance. Single guys go to dances.

If you are connected to a dance studio, other single women will be at their parties as well as the studio instructors and male students, so you will know people. Dance parties are safe and comfortable for single women.

Guys — nothing enhances a man’s romantic marketability more than becoming a decent dancer. Learning to dance is cost efficient and relatively painless. No surgery or blood loss, no sweaty hours at the gym, no personality makeovers needed. Just dance lessons.

What’s stopping you? Look up the dance studio nearest you and make that call! You’ll become a dancing babe magnet!

Think about the people in your life who are attractive, not from TV or films, from real life. When I say attractive I mean the whole package, someone that draws you closer, someone you want to listen to when they speak, someone you like laughing with, and someone who is attractive in appearance. Take a few minutes to do this.

Of the people you picked as attractive how many of them are visually attractive, good to look at? I am sure there are a few who are not your cup of tea but you still find them attractive. Why is this?

Attractiveness is a state of mind!

It truly is. Think of some of the people for example on TV who may be conventionally unattractive but have that certain something that makes them attractive: For example my wife thinks James Belushi has something about him, and Adam Sandler, Jerry Lewis, Helen Miran, Karen from Will and Grace.

What makes people attractive is their confidence, their zest for life and their ‘I don’t give a shit what you think about me’ attitude.

How to change your feeling about yourself

A lot of people for years have told themselves they are not attractive and guess what; they won’t be to other people as well. You won’t attract people to you if you feel unattractive yourself. You have to stop the years of that little voice in your head saying “I’m ugly, I’m fat, I’m unattractive.” If you tell yourself that often enough you will be all those things.

From TODAY start telling yourself you are attractive. I don’t mean look in the mirror and say ‘I am attractive, I am attractive.’ Positive talking does not work like that. You have to see yourself in situations where people are attracted to you, you have to feel the emotions of those situations, and you have to tell yourself occasionally throughout the day that you attract the right kind of people towards you.

This may take a few weeks to get you really from the ‘unattractive mindset’ to ‘attractive mindset.’ Due to the years of conditioning your mind has had it will find it difficult to give up on the image that you are unattractive.

Persevere

Keep going with the above exercise, everyday remind yourself how attractive you are. Think of all your best qualities and focus on them instead of focusing on the bad points about yourself, goodness knows we all have them but what makes the difference is that the attractive people don’t necessarily focus on them all the time.

I hate being around people when I was younger as I thought I was no good at talking, I thought people laughed at me, I thought I was no good. However the one thing I had going for me was relative good looks, and the only reason I knew this was because people kept on telling me and pretty soon I kept telling myself and pretty soon I really believed it. Then after years of self doubt I changed my inner talk to telling myself people did like me, people did think I was intelligent, I was funny, etc.

It’s the inner talk that keeps us believing what we believe. If you look for enough evidence that you are attractive you will find it, so start looking.

Exercise:

List the things you are good at, the things people say ‘she’s really good at that,’ or what you think you are good at yourself. For example, you might say I get on well with people, I am great at empathising with people, I love my job, I am kind, and I care a lot about animals. List everything.

Now pick the top five most important ones to you.

Over the next 3 weeks, see 21 days to a new habit , focus on your chosen 5 attributes. Every chance you get just remind yourself how good you are at (chosen attribute), see yourself being good at it, feel yourself being good at it. Make sure you do this every day and at every opportunity.
